Although much of Salzburg's popularity is due to its proximity to a number of major Austrian ski resorts, budget airlines are also realising that the destination can be popular year-round, both with culture vultures wanting to visit the home of Mozart, and with any hikers who want to enjoy the surrounding Sound of Music country.

Most of the major UK no-frills airlines offer Salzburg flights from one or more of their respective bases, with Ryanair and Thomson offering a particularly impressive range of cheap flights to Salzburg during the ski season.

If you cannot find direct flights to Salzburg, then you are more likely to find connecting flights via Frankfurt or Zurich than through the Austrian capital Vienna, which is poorly served by feeder flights from the UK.

Alternatively, Salzburg is around two hours by land from Munich. Although Salzburg offers an impressive range of ski flights, there is a better choice of year-round flights to Munich.

I'm surprised that considering Salzburg is a pretty popular destination year-round, and has such a good range of flights from other airports, why aren't there any flights from Heathrow to Salzburg?

Salzburg is an amazing city in its own right, as well is being gateway to numerous alpine resorts, which are great for hiking in the summer months as well as obviously being popular for skiing during the winter season. However, it is predominately a leisure destination, so I just can't see there being enough justification for flights from Heathrow to work.

On the other hand, it's easy to see why flights to Vienna work from Heathrow Airport, as the Austrian capital is an important destination both the business and pleasure. So the question I'd ask is the other way around -- given that Vienna is also such a key European city, why is it so hard to fly there from anywhere outside London?
