During the ski season, cheap flights to Lyon are much more widely available, both with budget and charter airlines. Outside this period, regular shuttle flights from Paris to France’s second city are available, although it can often be easier to take the train -- this can be done via Eurostar connections at Lille, or from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport, as well as from central Paris.

It's a mystery why Lyon remains off the well trodden French tourist path. France 's second city is an absolute gem, crammed with fabulous historical sites, a vibrant cultural scene and classy shops, all dramatically set on the confluence of the Rhone and Saone rivers, and within easy reach of the Alps . The real jewel in Lyon's crown is the food, for Lyon is the culinary capital of France, a gastronome's delight and a veritable magnet for those elusive Michelin stars. For classic Lyonnais fayre head to one of the many bouchons ' down-to-earth restaurants serving simple, homely food made with the finest fresh local produce. Apart from the outstanding cuisine, Lyon is also noted for its architectural heritage, best exemplified in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Vieux Lyon, which houses the greatest collection of Renaissance buildings in Europe . Delightful cobbled streets meander through the district, including the traboules, a network of covered passageways originally built to protect delicate silk from the rain during Lyon 's silk-trading heyday during the 1700s. Vieux Lyon is dominated by the magnificent Gothic St-Jean Cathedral. The heart of the city is the Presqu'ile, a narrow strip of land where the two rivers meet. This is the best place to explore Lyon 's chic shops. Across the Saone to the west is Vieux Lyon and Fourviere Hill, which is topped by the beautiful Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourviere, Lyon 's most famous landmark. Over the Rhone to the east of Presqu'ile, is the elegant Rive Gauche district. There is a wide range of good quality accommodation in Lyon, but note that it is a major business centre and rates can be high, especially during the week.

I'd like to go to a business social function in Lyon, but the event is on a Tuesday evening, and easyJet can fly me back the Wednesday after (to Edinburgh), but I'd have to fly out on the Saturday, which takes too much time out.

What is the best option for connecting - preferably from Glasgow? Via Heathrow, or via Paris?

Clearly, easyJet is a very convenient option for coming back after an evening function, as the departure is around lunchtime. So you have two choices to complete the trip - fly out one way on a different routing, or book a return trip involving a change of flights in both directions with either BA via Heathrow, or Air France via Paris.

The latter is going to be much more expensive than two low cost legs combined with a one way train journey. Remember that the TGV in France really shrinks the distance between cities, and the train will also take you direct to the terminal at CDG without having to go through central Paris. The journey takes just over 2hrs, starting from €30.

The terminals have been re-jigged a bit since I last used CDG, when Flybe were in 1, and easyJet in 3. Both are now in Terminal 2, which is the one you want, as the TGV station is right in the middle of the whole complex. It doesn't get easier than that!

However, Flybe's Paris flights aren't quite what they seem - they will sell you a ticket direct to Edinburgh, but it is operated by Air France. Their Glasgow flights are labelled as direct, but look at the flight time - over 3 1/2 hours! This is because the flights are actually routed via Cardiff, a bit naughty that they don't say that. Otherwise, all Flybe Paris to Glasgow and Edinburgh routings will involve a change somewhere down south - and that defeats the point of taking the train to Paris.

Wouldn't it be easier if Ryanair offered cheap flights to Lyon. Is that likely to happen?

Ryanair used to operate flights to 'Lyon' St Etienne, but they axed this route. They would need to be offered a very good incentive to move into Lyon. Even at Marseille, which opened up the 'mp2' low cost terminal, Ryanair have pulled many routes. They haven't set up bases in France because they don't like local labour laws, so it would be a question of which airports they might use to operate into Lyon.

Oddly enough, trying to find flights home from Lyon just over 10 years ago was my reason for setting up Flightmapping.com. If you are using the airport, don't forget to take a look at the stunning TGV station, designed by architect Santiago Calatrava. I ended up flying back to Stansted with Buzz, who were taken over by Ryanair, but the Lyon route was soon dropped.

Yes, I have been to the airport before, my flight was delayed so I had a wander around. The station is amazing! I wish we had something like that in Heathrow!

I doubt they'd have the space for such a structure in Heathrow, remember there's room for non-stoppers to pass straight through the middle too.
