Flight Summary

Dusseldorf International Airport has excellent infrastructure, offering a suburban rail station in the basement, combined with connections throughout the Rhine Ruhr region through a high speed rail station, which is access via a monorail link.

Destination Summary

Dusseldorf's Rhine Ruhr international airport is one of Germany's most important hubs, after Frankfurt and Munich. Dusseldorf International is generally considered by airlines to be a high fares airport, the range of flights from the UK being limited to the major business cities, with Ryanair also offering a few flights into Weeze, some 70 kilometres away. Unless you are planning on hiring a car, you might well find that Cologne Bonn is a much more accessible alternative than Weeze.

Quick Facts

  • Airport Code: DUS

James Says

This key telecommunications and fashion centre in the heart of Germany's Rhine-Ruhr industrial belt counts as its best known sons none other than late 1970s/early 80s musical pioneers Kraftwerk. It's an association that fits Dusseldorf, with its welding of electronica, efficiency and trend-setting, to a black-clad, unsmiling, finely-tuned tee: one suspects there must be a dozen Kraftwerks-in-waiting dotted about the city as it stands today, slaving away in the IT departments of Dusseldorf's many new media enterprises.

Perhaps they spend their lunch hours browsing the corridors of the city's Academy of Fine Arts, with its close links to Joseph Beuys and Paul Klee, or the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, with its works by Picasso and Matisse. At weekends, they might brush up on their knowledge of the classics at the home of the German Opera, or simply stroll along the embankments and promenades of the Rhine in a search for more musical inspiration.

Dusseldorf clearly has an eye for all things avant-garde: the promenades lead towards the spanking new Media Harbour, where numerous state-of-the-art constructions are firmly upstaged by Frank Gehry's wibbly-wobbly New Customs House.

Mark Says

Dusseldorf is one of Europe 's most fashionable cities. Now, I know this might sound like a bit of a misnomer, after all Germany is not a country noted for its trend setting, but you'll need to cast aside your preconceptions of stonewash jeans and blonde mullets if visiting this particular pocket of Rhineland.

Dusseldorf , which is situated on the Rhine River 15 miles north of Cologne , is a shopper's utopia, with a staggering range of exclusive shops and boutiques. Konigsallee is one of the most elegant shopping streets in Europe , and if you want to observe the latest styles and looks fresh off the catwalk, then this is the place to be.

North of Konigsallee is the Hofgarten, Germany 's oldest inner-city public park dating back to 1769. As well as being Germany 's fashion capital, sophisticated Dusseldorf is also a cultural leader. The city boasts the German Opera House, and a fabulous array of theatres and museums, including the renowned Kunstsammlung Nord-Rhein-Westfalen modern art museum.

80% of Dusseldorf was destroyed by allied bombers during World War II, but the Old Town has retained its historic charm, not to mention over 250 pubs. A delightful promenade lined with restaurants bars runs between the Old Town and the Rhine River.

This is also a good starting point for many of the boat trips along the Rhine. Dusseldorf is a major conference and business centre and hotel rates tend to be more expensive when a big exhibition is on, so book in advance if possible. Summer is a good time to visit because the weather it at its best and there tend to be less business events taking place in the city.
