In recent months easyJet have opened a new base at Malpensa, following earlier frustrations over their inability to get decent slots at the more central Linate. Although cash strapped Italian airline Alitalia have recently retreated from their short lived Birmingham to Milan Malpensa route, the airport remains Milan's major hub, with British Airways offering direct flights to Milan Malpensa from Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol, as well as from London.

Every time I think of Malpensa, it sounds in vague Franco-Spano-Italian like 'badly thought out' - and unfortunately, that is probably a very good description of the place!

The main terminal has nice shiny marble floors, but arrive in the el-cheopo bit, and expect a long walk or wait for the bus to get to the main terminal so you can take the train to town.

I took flights to Milan from Birmingham, because I couldn't find any direct flights to Florence or Pisa. There's supposed to be high speed services going straight to Florence, taking about 2 1/2 hours, but guess what -they only run TWICE a day! Going into the centre of Milan - careful, they don't always take you to central station - changing, then going on to Florence is a lot of hassle.

For Milan itself, I wouldn't bother with Malpensa - if you can, fly to Linate, it is far more central. And even Ryanair's Milan that is actually Bergamo really isn't that much further out compared to Malpensa!
