I've always fancied a trip to Groningen, as I am a keen cyclist, and this is the Dutch city that really shows the way (forget about all the hype about Amsterdam, nearly 60% of all journeys in Groningen are made by bike!).
Architecturally, the city is a gem too, with an ultramodern museum right opposite the station, so it is an easy day trip if you are basing yourself in the big A'dam.
As for flights to Groningen - well, you might aswell forget it, unless you are based near Aberdeen, which is the only UK city to have a direct link. This is largely down to the oil business.
Forget about taking flight connections either, there aren't any worth talking about. By far the easiest way in is to take one of the numerous flights to Amsterdam from just about every corner of the British Isles, and then continue by train or in a hire car - not that you'll be able to drive it or park it in central Groningen, for reasons I've outlined above!

Dutch trains are efficient and reliable - not particularly cheap, but then neither are ours. Connecting through Schiphol is easy, and if you have time to spare, there are many worse places to spend it than Amsterdam!
