I'd like to do a tour round the Norwegian fjords, but my options for getting there are either ridiculously expensive flights to Bergen with Eastern, or Ryanair's so called cheap flights to Oslo, but I think they will dump me in the middle of no-where.

How easy is it to travel by train around Norway - could I take the train to either Bergen or Stavanger and then continue around the fjords from there?

I'm afraid not, and as you suggest, those Ryanair flights are almost certainly a false economy. Trains from Oslo to anywhere on the west coast take a good 7 hours + - maybe a nice outing if you are starting your day in Oslo, but not practical to combine with an inbound flight from the UK.

Be glad that Newcastle Airport offers flights to Bergen, and book well ahead for the best prices. Trains in Norway are prohibitively expensive anyway (as is car hire ) - so I'd forget the long distance journey, and make sure you do fit in the world famous Flam railway!
