Ryanair might try to call Bratislava "Vienna East", but Vienna is also "Bratislava West", if the Austrian capital happens to be a more convenient option to fly into.

At least Ryanair flights to Bratislava operate from a reasonable selection of regional airports, not just from London.

You mention using Vienna as a way of getting to Bratislava. How do I get from Bratislava airport to the Austrian capital?

The details of public transport from Bratislava Airport are here - http://www.airport-bratislava.sk/en/arriving-by-public-transport.html - although I have looked up the three providers mentioned, and can't find any evidence that this bus currently runs. The journey should be about 70 minutes to Vienna direct. You can certainly take a bus to the centre of Bratislava, taking around 25 minutes, and then a bus or train from here to Vienna. The bus will set you back €7.70, and takes about 90 minutes. The train will take just under an hour.

If you go this way, I would take advantage of the opportunity to spend at least a few hours in Bratislava aswell.

The bus is really easy, the ticket office is near the left corner exit as you leave the arrivals hall and they run every 30 minutes or so from a stop just 100m from the ticket office. It takes about an hour from Vienna to Bratislava BUS STATION. I put that in capitals, because the bus and train station are about 15 minutes apart via tram/bus....just so you know

Why would I want to consider flights to Vienna as an alternative to Bratislava, when I can go direct to the Slovakian capital from Birmingham. Looks like more anti-Ryanair sentiment. You say people should take the "greener" option, so does this mean taking two flights on older polluting aircraft instead of one flight on an efficient one?

Bob - all we have suggested is that Vienna might be an alternative for Bratislava and vice versa. If you can get direct flights from Birmingham with Ryanair, then why not take them? However, as the list shows, plenty of other UK regional airports don't have direct flights to Slovakia, and it might be much easier to take a connection to Vienna.
