Flight Summary
Gothenberg is served by two international airports - the main Landvetter airport (GOT), and the budget oriented Saeve (GSE), although only a few UK airports offer flights to either of them. Gothenberg is one of the few cities where the budget airport is actually closer to the centre of town than the main airport, although home grown airline FlyMe also use Gothenberg International, leaving Saeve to the likes of Ryanair.

Ask a Swede which is their favourite city, and chances are 'Göteborg' might be mentioned somewhere along the line. Strategically located on the west coast of Sweden, surrounded by areas of stunning natural beauty and with a rich maritime heritage, Gothenburg ' to us non-Swedish speakers ' has a café culture and gastronomic excellence to rival any city in Scandinavia. It also has a noticeably more relaxed feel than the capital and an array of attractions that belie its 'second city' status.
From the canal-framed old town at its core, Gothenburg spreads out pleasingly on all sides: from the harbour to the north, where old ships and dormant shipyards meet modern architectural eye-openers like the Skanskaskrapan skyscraper and the Gothenburg Opera, to the southerly neighbourhood surrounding the fashionable Avenyn boulevard, where cafes, restaurants, bars and museums abound. Venture further beyond the inner city and you'll be rewarded with tranquil parks such as the Trädgårdsföreningen and Slottskogsparken, not to mention the much-loved Liseberg amusement park, a regular crowd-puller since the early 1900s.
If café crawling is your thing then a good old-fashioned saunter is probably the best way of getting around this compact city; for those seeking to take the weight off their feet though, the city's tram system is both efficient and comprehensive ' and tinged with romance come summer, when the Ringlinien vintage tram comes to town. If you're staying in the city for any longer than a few hours, it's also well worth buying the Gothenburg Pass, a financial godsend providing free access to most of the city's major attractions and public transport, on top of a host of shop and restaurant discounts.
Gothenburg's privileged location on its very own archipelago, and close to the dramatic Bohuslän coast, the immense lakes of Vänern and Vättern and the Göta Canal, makes it well worth staying awhile once you're finished with the city, as does the wide range of accommodation options at your disposal in the region. Add to this a busy international events calendar and some of the best seafood in Scandinavia, and it's no wonder Swedes are so fond of the place.
