Mark Says

Malmö is officially Sweden's comeback kid. Hit hard by the declining shipbuilding industry in the late 1970s and 1980s and forced to sell off its landmark Kockums Crane, the city has bounced back bigger and better than ever. The monstrous crane has been replaced by one of Europe's most striking and elegant new buildings, the Turning Torso tower, and the breathtaking Oresund road and rail bridge has brought the city to within half an hour of the Danish capital Copenhagen.
The city itself rewards more than a little exploration. The small but perfectly formed old town encompasses the cobbled squares of Stortorget and Lilla Torg, the latter densely populated with cosy cafes and transformed, for the romantic at heart, into an open-air ice rink come winter. Further out of the centre, you can't miss the Möllevången neighbourhood, a showcase for the ethnic and cultural diversity that sets Malmö apart from the rest of Sweden. Whatever your culinary or night-time preferences, you're more than likely to find something to suit them here. As if to balance out the irregular chaos of Möllevången, the city is also blessed with some lovely parks: take a stroll through Pildammsparken, Kungsparken or Slottsparken for a healthy dose of Swedish calm and contemplation.
As one of Sweden's most important business centres, Malmö has a surprisingly good selection of hotels, whose prices tend to drop dramatically at weekends. Exactly when you visit the city, though, depends entirely on what you want. In summertime, the locals flock to the 2.5km-long beach, the parks or the brand new Västra Hamnen (West Harbour) development; while winter is catered for with enough hats, coats and steaming mugs of cocoa to warm even the coldest of visitors' hearts.
