  I think Newquay airport have really missed a trick by introducing that sneaky so-called development fee. Without that, maybe we'd still have flights to Malaga, and certainly a few Ryanair routes - Stansted for sure, and why not Dublin and Prestick?
  
  Instead, the range of flights to Newquay is now absolutely dire. I don't mind the train journey once you get beyond Exeter - if you can get a seat that is - but at busy times getting a decently priced train ticket is night on impossible, and Flybe need some competition, they can never be trusted to operate routes on their own, as their management always put their snouts in the trough!

  Brian, I completely agree with you about the charge, but not so much about Ryanair. What Newquay needs is regular dependable flights from key hub airports like Birmingham, Newcastle and Belfast etc, and I think Flybe are the kind of airline that would suit us best.
  
  The problem is not so much the security charge, which is a small amount to pay, but the fact that people taking holiday flights to Newquay get clobbered with two sets of Air Passenger Duty, when if they take flights to Spain for example, usually about 4x the carbon elephant sized foot print, they only pay once!
  
  Talk about UK government completely shooting its own tourism industry in the foot - where's the clapping emoticon for that?

  I would not mind paying the development charge if the airport actually developed but how can it when airlines cut it from their flight list. Newquay was the only connection to Cornwall from France. Therefore my only connection with my son and his family, now we just connect on line,because to travel any other way takes a day and a half each way. I cannot be the only person that misses flights from somewhere other than the midlands. What about people that have to go to London. The airport and council are loosing it big time. Soon it will be just another little airport that closes. " Do you remember when Newquay had an Airport .........It was busy once before it closed "

  You can still take flights from Newquay to Gatwick, and there is also a good train service down the spine of Cornwall - but it does get a bit slow on the branch to Newquay.
  
  Airlines will only operate routes that turn them a profit, and this is very difficult to do when the development charge is also on top of APD and when this charge is added twice for a UK domestic flight. In this respect, I don't think Newquay is doing as badly as it could be, and I hope it will be around for a while yet, unlike Plymouth. Remember that Newquay airport really serves the whole of Cornwall, and Plymuouth had a much faster rail link to London, making it hard for the all-important flights to Gatwick to be sustainable. Running what should have been point-to-point routes through Newquay AND Plymouth also didn't help.
  
  Where exactly in France are you based? It should still be possible to get between most places in France and Newquay well within a working day - or are you talking about the ferry, which I agree is slow, but that has always been part of the fun of going by sea!

  What is really needed are direct flights to London ie: London City Airport. Flying to Gatwick (just outside Brighton!) still leaves one with a long difficult journey to the centre of London. This will become even more important with the proposed reduction in rail services from Cornwall to London.

  Sorry, but Newquay will only get busier when this "developement tax" is taken away - I will not use it solely for that reason - someone somewhere had better get some common sense or as noted by another writer, another airport that will close - cut all fees and attract the airlines, the customers will then come, even in these dire times

  David, we completely agree. Two new supermarkets have just opened in Stratford. You would not expect them to charge a £2 transaction fee to cover the cost of construction - we expect them to make the costs back during the normal running of the store. Airports should be no different.

  Actually, I think these development fees are a necessary evil. You have gone for the easy cliche about supermarkets (and even repeated yourself), but you have failed to come up with a decent reason for how the airports would otherwise fund themselves without such a charge. Given that you have some excellent analysis elswhere on the site, I would have expected better from you!

  Why aren't there any flights from Birmingham or East Midlands to Newquay? Surely the treck down to Cornwall from here is almost as bad as it is from Manchester?

  i loved flying with air southwest from leeds/bradford, jet2 did it for a season but now there is nothing,going by road or rail is a nightmare !
  i have family in falmouth but don,t see them since the demise of newquayf flights very sad. JP.

  Unfortunately, Newquay airport is in a difficult rut to get out of - they didn't play ball with Ryanair, losing a key London route that provides vital revenue, and they are stung by two bits of APD when compared with, say, flights to France from the north of England, and to top it all off they have added another "development" fee on top of existing taxes and charges.
  
  Not an easy one to solve I'm afraid.
